The (Very, Very) Belated Weekend Catch-Up: No, San Francisco’s SantaCon Isn’t ‘Cool Again,’ Babe

Plus: Golden Gate Park in San Francisco has a massive LED tree — ‘Entwined: Elder Mother’ and it’s truly a sight to behold.

Over this past weekend — (yes, we’re acutely aware that we’re in the middle of this current weekend, but please offer us a bit of slack; we’re tired) — one of the most heterosexual events again fell on San Francisco: SantaCon. It’s a weekend day that’s rife with less than sober behaviors, actions that have left some San Francisco bars to outright refuse service to SantaCon participants. And they’re not exactly hard to identify; aside from being obnoxiously vociferous, they’re usually dressed in either Santa Claus costumes procured from Amazon… or unpractically risqué festive regalia — again, most likely from Amazon.

SantaCon’s SF participants are known for littering; causing an uptick in vandalism in San Francisco; initiating drunken brawls, both in and out of bars; for sneaking in outside alcohol — to save a few bucks at a bar they’d otherwise spend their money at. Oh, and let’s not forget about the vehicular traffic and uncomfortable bots of college-frat-bro-manners that make many of us not only cringe but bring us back to, say, less than favorable memories. This year was no different in the above regard.

So no, The Bold Italic: SantaCon did not, in fact, “get cool again.” But keep on publishing your hollow fluff pieces, babes — we see you for what you are. (And what you “are” is a conduit for GrowSF’s politically conservative-leaning agenda, much of which is both influenced and funded by large single-party donors.)

SantaCon aside, what else transpired over this past weekend? Let’s take a look.

  • There was a stabbing inside Mission Bay last Friday night that left one person injured. SFPD responded to a report of an aggravated assault on the 600 block of Mission Bay Boulevard North around 7:50 p.m. this past Friday; the on-site office found one victim suffering from non-life-threatening injuries; as of publishing, no arrests have been made in connection with the case.   • Thousands rallied outside San Francisco City Hall in solidarity with calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. The march on SF’s civic center was merely one of the weekend’s protests that transpired around the SF Bay Area in solidarity with Palestinians; protesters could be heard chanting “free Palestine” and “permanent cease-fire now” in unison.   • Golden Gate Park’s massive LED willow tree is truly a magical sight to behold — and is a must-see, IRL. A spiritual successor to this summer’s Entwined expects, “Entwined: Elder Mother” is a new iteration of the famous installation, which, too, is installed in Peacock Meadow. The 30-foot-tall metal sculpture sways with the wind, offering a place for parkgoers to take respite under, day or night; however, it’s the latter time of day when the sculpture shines (pun intended), showcasing its ever-changing illumination and color; lQR codes on the tree ‘leaves’ also allow passerby to regulate the tree’s lighting designs.
