Coyote Filmed Running Down Famous, Windy San Francisco Road

There are an estimated hundred or so coyotes that roam San Francisco; one of them recently doubled as a predictable tourist when it went down Lombard Street.

On any given day, at any given time, SF’s Lombard Street is lined with tourists snapping pictures of the iconic road. With eight hairpin twists, all of which sit on one of San Francisco’s steepest streets, it’s a human-made wonder worth marveling.

Though it’s not just humans who frequent the iconoclastic roadway. Coyotes, too, enjoy prancing down the brick-paved street in order.

“Just another tourist strolling down Lombard Street,” reads embedded text in a video shared by the Instagram account OnlyInSF, by way of user [at]asalooooo. In the seconds-long video, a wayward coyote is seen scurrying down Lombard Street, shouldering the rose gardens that shoulder each side. Like many San Francisco coyotes, this one appears confident, unfettered by the daylight hours — for an animal that’s primarily nocturnal to venture out in the open while the sun is still out, a certain conviction is needed — and those perched above it, filming its excursion.

The video ends like most urban coyote sightings … with the medium-sized canine seemingly disappearing inside the concrete jungle. While we’re not sure if it caused a localized stir amongst tourists, what we can confidently confirm is that the coyote is, like the other 100 or so coyotes that call San Francisco home, existing (for the most part) peacefully with us.
