San Francisco’s Famous Holiday House Officially Hits the Market

The beloved SF Christmas lights house on Castro Street is finally on the market after its owner moved away in 2024.

The four-bedroom house at 68 Castro Street is a sight to behold around the holiday season. For years, the domicile, which was built in 1904, has been illuminated with thousands of Christmas lights each year, soon after Thanksgiving. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the house became a seasonal balm and touchstone; traffic around the house saw crowds spaced in socially distanced groups, all eyeing the Nutcracker decor from however far (or close) they could.

The house’s seasonally jubilant decor has even previously garnered it a Clark Griswold Brightest Award. And it seems that the home’s owner, Geoffrey, has put the house on the market after leaving the Bay Area sometime last year.

Listed today, June 4th, the four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom house is selling for a cool $3.34 million. Complete with Alabaster chandeliers and yards of custom woodworking — many, if not most of the house’s cabinetry features unique etchings and carpentry constructions — the house is immaculately done.

White walls help contrast the pitch-black staircase’s handrails and banisters; the kitchen, likely larger than some of our apartments, is wrapped with marble countertops and black matching hardware that help pull focus toward the stainless-steel appliances and sumptuous tile work; the vertical shiplap and well-spaced in-wall shelves stretch toward the ceiling, and each bathroom features Victorian era-like sinks.

The pièce de résistance? An outdoor terrace capable of transporting any would-be day drinker to a far-flung Mediterranean landscape.

Couple the home’s celebrity status with the neighborhood’s desirability, don’t expect to see this listing up for long … even at its dizzying price (for us mere Millennials).

Oh, and before you ask: No, unfortunately, the holiday decor won’t come with the purchase of the house; the decor was supposedly sold some time ago. All we can ask for — hope for, pray for, yearn for — is that whoever forks over the millions to acquire this house puts in the same effort decorating the home around the holidays as Geoffrey did.
