Yet Another San Francisco Gay Bar Has Been ‘Deactivated’ on Instagram Without Any Prior Warning

Beaux’s Instagram account was removed from the Meta-owned platform abruptly on Tuesday, September 15 — sparking outrage and serving as another example of an SF-based queer venue being suspended from the app.

For the second time this year (and the third time since 2025), Beaux, the popular queer watering hole and nightlife venue in The Castro, has had its Instagram profile deactivated. The reason? An all-too-familiar one for gay nightlife venues across the country: violating community guidelines … presumably because of the account’s queer affiliation.

“Last night, Instagram suspended Beaux’s THIRD account, [at]beauxnightclub, without any warning or violations of community guidelines,” reads a post, collectively authored by six handles, one of which is owned by San Francisco-based drag royalty, Lady Camden.

“Our previous account [at]beauxincastro was deleted in April 2026, following the loss of our original account [at]beauxinthecastro in 2025,” continues the post, before mourning the loss of hyperlocal queer nostalgia and history as a result of those deactivations:  “Across three accounts, more than 25,000 followers, irreplaceable photos and videos of LGBTQ history – and years of community connection – have been erased.”

Meta, Instagram’s umbrella parent company, has become increasingly stringent on gay accounts across its social media platforms. Since December of 2025, hundreds of accounts organized around LGBTQIA+ topics andsame-sex sexual health-related accounts have been deactivated across Facebook and Instagram; those familiar with Meta’s inner workings have gone on record to say these hits are largely done by AI-assisted moderation, using automation processes to speed-line account reviews — often leading to unfair and abrupt account deactivations and disruptions.

(Meta itself published a lofty list of content policy updates in January of 2025 that sparked outrage for anti-gay wording. Critics of the content policy overhaul were also concerned that losing certain restrictions around hate speech would cause an increase in on-platform bullying and harassment around sexuality. They were right.)

“LGBTQ+ bars, nightclubs, performers and creators in San Francisco, across the country, and the world have reported accounts being suspended, restricted or removed without warning or violation of community guidelines,” the post concluded. “It is time to sound the alarm.”

The Stud, the historic gay bar in SoMa that rose from the ashes in 2023 after COVID-spurred financial woes closed the original iteration in 2020, faced a similar situation in August when its Instagram and Facebook accounts were also suspended without notice. Public outcry eventually led Meta to unsuspend the account.
