Two Double Rainbows Arched Around San Francisco This Weekend

One double rainbow appeared over the Bay Bridge Sunday… with another popping up over Crissy Field just a half-hour later.

San Francisco is no stranger to rainbows as of recent. With an unusually wet tail end to this spring of deception (IYKYK), the SF Bay Area has been ringed with optical phenomena, including fogbows. But double rainbows, though relatively common, only form under certain conditions when the sun is low in the sky. (Fun Fact: In theory, all rainbows that form are double rainbows — it’s just that cloudy or hazy conditions often prevent the secondary [and far fainter] rainbow from being seen.)

With this past weekend’s smatter of rain, one of these visual wonders haloed the Bay Bridge in the SF Bay Area and Crissy Field in San Francisco, creating paradisical treats.

“ A dramatic double rainbow painted the sky today over San Francisco Bay and the Bay Bridge,” reads a post on Instagram from fine arts and landscape photographer Dan Kurtzman.

Kurtzman also shared another double rainbow that transpired near the Golden Gate Bridge “just 30 minutes” after he photographed the one over the Bay Bridge.

“I was lucky to capture a second dramatic rainbow yesterday, just 30 minutes after the one over the Bay Bridge in the last Reel I posted,” writes Kurtzman on Instagram. “When I saw this one materialize, I dashed to one of my favorite spots overlooking Crissy Field, where I watched this beautiful scene unfold.”

What a gorgeous unfurling, indeed. Because rainbows denote good luck, wellness, happiness, and health, here’s hoping the fact that we got four of them on Sunday helps usher in all the high vibrational energies this work week.
