And Just Like That, the Power Came Back on in San Francisco … Sans a Few Vulnerable Neighborhoods

3,800 PG&E account holders are still without power in San Francisco — but respite (read: their electricity) will be restored no later than tomorrow morning.

As of Monday, December 22nd, the vast majority of San Francisco that suffered from Saturday’s historic power outage — a blackout that affected 130,000 households, leaving about a third of the city’s residents in darkness — have their lights back on.

In a series of announcements and posts on social media, PG&E shared that “most” of the customers affected by the recent power outage have had their electricity restored ahead of the 2 p.m. expected time today. As of publishing, the Richmond District has seen its power revived.

But there are some 4,000 PG&E customers still without power. And those account holders happen to be in some of San Francisco’s most financially volatile zip codes.

The Civic Center and some sections of the Tenderloin and SoMa have now been without power for over 48 hours. Historically, these three neighborhoods have high rates of poverty that well exceed City averages; parts of Western Addition, which also boast high-poverty-rates, are also suffering ongoing power outages, albeit with less than 50 households affected.

The aforementioned neighborhoods are expected to receive power no later than Tuesday, December 23rd, at 6 a.m. — “we expect to restore the remaining 3,800 customers by 6 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23,” per PG&E in a post on X.

PG&E stated today it will issue credits to both residential and commercial account holders affected by the recent power outages; a not-so-gentle reminder that those who have renters’ insurance can file a claim for spoiled food as a result of the blackout.
