Y’all See That Rainbow Over San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island?

Not only are the winter months officially “Sunset and Sunrise Season” in San Francisco, but the weather also makes us wonder why we don’t call it the “Rainbow City,” as well.

The past month has seen San Francisco bathed in gorgeous sunsets, painted with blue skies, and, as of yesterday, some pretty wet weather — which has been ringed by glorious light refractions. If you did look up from your various dating apps on Monday, January 22nd, you might’ve noticed a spectacular morning rainbow arch from Alcatraz Island around the afternoon.

The vibrant, defined rainbow that ringed San Francisco became a temporary darling on social media, courtesy of a gorgeous picture captured by one of our favorite local shutterbugs, Stuart Berman. Residents took to X and Instagram Monday to harp on the beguiling natural phenomena. (Fun fact: Rainbows are caused by sunlight and atmospheric conditions when light enters a water droplet, slowing down and bending as it goes from air to denser water.)

“Rainbow over Alcatraz this afternoon,” Berman posted on X with an image of the rainbow arching off in the distance behind the 22-acre island. The image has since garnered thousands of views and hundreds of likes across social media. Berman also managed to capture a rare phenomenon featuring a rainbow — a “fog bow” — in May of 2023; the circular iridescent sheen was perfectly backdropped by the Golden Gate Bridge peaking out of the dense fog coverage.

Can we start calling San Francisco “The Rainbow City,” too? Because TBH: We high-key are all for that becoming more common than “S*n Fr*n.”
