San Francisco is a running city. The metro’s namesake marathon is lauded as one of the most prestigious in the world — a race latticed with gorgeous vistas, historic landmarks, and enough elevation gains to tire a horse. It makes sense, too, that San Francisco hosts the largest footrace in the United States … which is colored by costumes: Bay to Breakers.
Recently, world-famous music producer, DJ, and “yes, daddy” legend Diplo hosted a weekend run in SF.
SF’s inaugural Diplo’s Run Clubs attracted an estimated 15,000 participants for a morning run along the Embarcadero. The 5K was met with overwhelmingly positive vibes and reviews with runners celebrating the footrace’s communal, low-key, convivial energy. But of the criticisms, the one mentioned frequently was a want for pace-specific corrals and starts; this year’s race began at once — an all-out race to the finish, sans much organization or consideration of varying paces.
The hours-long event included DJ sets, deals on merchandise, dancing, and pre-evening rave party feels. Of course, Mayor Breed took it upon herself to get in a photo op with Diplo (and the dancing dinosaurs).
“It was a beautiful foggy San Francisco morning—just the way we like it— and perfect for the first ever [Diplo’s Runc Club],” she writes on Instagram, dressed in an ensemble not conducive to breaking a 20-minute 5K time. “We had 15,000 people out here — and not just from SF and the Bay Area. We had runners from India, the UK, Brazil, and 37 states, all coming together for this 5k race and music festival.”
Regalia jabs aside, any instance of SF’s magnet at a running mecca growing strangers is well worth celebrating. What else transpired over the weekend? Let’s take a look.
